As part of their work to promote careers opportunities across the county, Innovation Nottinghamshire have confirmed four new summer work experience projects for Nottinghamshire students.
Working in partnership with both Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham, the not-for-profit company will be supporting ten students on four different projects including creating an information video about 5G, developing a podcast, carrying out market research on the engineering sector and conducting a feasibility study on a brand-new visitor entertainment concept.
Nick Mellors, founder of Innovation Nottinghamshire, “we all know that getting real-life practical work experience makes a huge difference to the life and career opportunities of our young people, I see no reason why young people in our county should miss put on these opportunities, so we are trying to do something about it.”
“We have some awesome universities and FE colleges across Nottinghamshire and we have had the chance to work with some great students at all levels on all kinds of projects – I’m really looking forward to the summer.”

Innovation Nottinghamshire’s 5G Careers programme picked up the Discover Ashfield STEM Inspiration Award at the 2022 awards ceremony on 11th November. The award recognises work to inspire young people in science, technology, engineering and maths. Working with students across the district at West Notts College, ATTFE College & Inspire; the 5G Careers programme sets out to raise young people’s awareness of the ways in which technology, not just 5G, is already changing the world of work they are about enter – across every sector from care to construction.
During the summer a great group of NTU students worked with us to create their own interpretation of the potential for Augmented Reality to enhance local visitor attractions.
Scripted, developed and delivered by Yaseen Ahmed, Amber Mae Richardson & Sandra Jedrzejak as part of their #Grads4Nottm summer project – the video showcases Nottinghamshire's 5G Connected Forest project working with Parkwood Leisure, the operators of the historic Rufford Abbey, to develop the 5G 'Ghost Walk' which is being incorporated with Rufford Abbey's other immersive visitor attractions - 'Abbey Tales' (the film includes some clips for this too).

Innovation Nottinghamshire developed the UK’s first (& so far only) 5G Careers programme to provide students about to enter the world of work with an early insight into the ways 5G and the technologies it powers is already changing every business sector they are looking to join – from care to construction & from tourism to engineering.
Although the programme touches on the opportunities for technical and telecoms careers, using real life examples happening today its primary focus is on the opportunities 5G brings to all sectors as an enabler of technologies such as:
All four of Nottinghamshire’s FE Colleges are now taking part in the programme, as well as several youth education providers, with the programme recently supporting it’s 1,000th student (a group of Accountancy students from West Notts College).
The success of the programme so far means that all the colleges/providers are now planning to include it for their new students next academic year, and the Innovation Nottinghamshire team are working through the summer on building an online version to make the information even more accessible to more students as they prepare to become the East Midlands business leaders of the future.
Innovation Nottinghamshire have begun a new series of bite-sized updates on technical & digital innovations, especially where they focus on Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands.
In Innovation Byte 1 the focus is on 5G powered visitor attractions.
As part of Nottinghamshire’s 5G Connected Forest project, project partners from the Smart Sensing team at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) developed ‘Tag in the Park’, a proximity-based treasure hunt for visitors to Rufford Abbey Country Park that could use 5G to add augmented reality (AR) to their experience as they explore this historic and natural setting.
